The RRS has been active in amateur rocketry since the late 1940's and maintains a 40 acre test area (the MTA) north of Edwards AFB and Mojave, California. Based out of Southern California, the various members design and build solid, hybrid and liquid fueled engines and rockets to fly them in. Membership is open to anyone interested in amateur rocketry. In 1998 several members of the RRS successfully launched a rocket to an altitude of 53 miles from the Black Rock Desert.
